I'm addicted to music, movies, and television and from that was born a love for creating fan videos.
Like most people, I have my inspirations. I think VeritasProductions is just plain amazing. Her timings, effects, everything are great! Also, I adore Peri77666. She has a talent for finding the emotion. I only hope to be as fabulous as these two ladies one day!
Robin Hood and Legend of the Seeker are easily my favorite fandoms, but I have ventured out into Gossip Girl, Veronica Mars, Pride and Prejudice, Firefly, Tudors, and Chuck. I hope to add Harry Potter, and Pirates of the Caribbean to my resume.
Like many vidders who came before me (and all those who will come after), I started with Windows Movie Maker. It's not the perfect program (limited effects!), but it's a good place to start. I switched to Sony Vegas about a year ago and a half, and I'm still learning how to use it! I'm sure I will never completely get the hang of it, but it is fun to work with all the same.
Vidding is simply a hobby of mine. It is in no way my "day job." I think it would be great to cut/edit videos for a living, but it's not my living (but I wish it was!).
JUDGING
As a judge, I'm pretty picky. Effects need to be used really well. I don't like things to be too busy. There's a difference between using an overlay because you can and because it matches the mood, music, moment of a song. If you're going to use a lot of effects, they better be good and clean. This is why, in my opinion, almost everyone should begin with Windows Movie Maker (or other similar programs). Learn to edit before you bury your viewer in zooms, overlays, and flashing lights. Also voice-overs should compliment the story, not detract. If the voices are so warbly that I need a transcript, then that's not good. I'm a huge sucker for good timing. I like scenes to rise and fall to the music. Timing is important whether the song is fast or slow. Of course the video should say something, be about something -- not just a string of clips thrown together. A great video uses the song to explain a relationship, character, time period, etc. The song and the story should match.
Now, if I could only get myself to follow some of my own rules! :D
